This spring, the Ministry of Tourism and Archeology in Egypt, hosted a press conference with the official delegation of journalists from Romania. Among the topics discussed were the variation in the number of tourists before and after the Covid-19 pandemy, measures that were taken into consideration in order for the tourists to feel safe, eco-tourism as a possibility of innovation in Egypt, funds allocated for tourism promotion and the balance between preservation and development.

In 2019 there were about 30 million tourists in Egypt, this led to a substantial growth of the country’s budget. Last trimester of 2021 was close in respect of digits to the same period of 2019, the number of Romanian tourists being almost double.  Although there is a crisis between Russia and Ukraine, these being the first two leading position regarding tourists that visit Egypt, the numbers from the beginning of 2022 look good enough in order for the Egyptian authorities not to worry.

The tourism industry is granted by the Ministry of Finance and there are agreements like the English-Canadian one - with the theme “Egypt is alive”, serving as one way of advertising. An UNWTO conference with the main theme “The Human Being”, was hosted at the beginning of April in Egypt and the 27 UN COP on climate change conference will be hosted in the Land of the Pyramids too. These actions promote the tendency of Egypt to granting more attention to eco-tourism matters. Currently all hotels in Sharm El Sheik have to have a green certificate.

“Green is a must, not a luxury”, Dr. Khaled Al-Anani declares. In terms of promoting tourism in Egypt, there are some strategies like a co-marketing plan with the airlines, combining Sun-Sea tourism with sightseeing and adventure tourism, B2B and C2C communication, infrastructure projects and providing of flights between the most important tourist settlements: Hurghada and Sharm El Sheik and a minimum rate of $ 28 double room/night in a 4* accommodation and a $ 40 double room/night in a 5* accommodation.

As part of the development plan, New Cairo will be the administrative capital of Egypt where all the main legal and administrative entities will rest their headquarters.

With regards to preservation, the local authorities organize many festivals in order to both promote the old rituals and to present them to the tourists. One of the parades is located in Luxor - this being one of the most important event - around 500 journalists attended this festival, but there are many similar events too.

Dr. Khaled Al-Anani declared:

“Egypt is a very complex destination, covering up a lot of impressive historical monuments, as well as a delightful gastronomy, art, music and culture. Currently it is a developing country, a lot of civilisations live together, Muslims and Christians. The Egyptian refer to Egypt as “my mother” - the meaning of Egypt in Arab is about family. There are a lot of references in the Holy Bible about Egypt - there are 22 spots where the Holy Family spent their time and there is a huge restauration plan for this area. There are already six spots open, so the plan is ongoing”.

“Waling in Christ footsteps” is a circuit in Mount Sinai, this being just one of the many spiritual places to visit.

Egypt remains one of the most interesting and beautiful destination on Earth, here being the only wonder of the ancient world still in existence: the great pyramid of Giza. Egypt attracts like a magnet, offering so many intense emotions and welcomes it’s tourists with relaxing oasis of calm or adventures and mysteries ready to turn on even the most rich imagination.
